constant frame freeze/stuttering with NVidia GPU

Post by hopsabilto »

Issue description: each 10-30 seconds there's a frame freeze for around a second. Issue has persisted for 6 month!

System information: https://pastebin.com/raw/Yj74Wmt2

NVidia control panel: https://imgur.com/a/csLyD7x
  • Issue happens with two different brand laptops, one using a GTX1070 and the other a RTX3070.
  • Issue does not happen when using Intel integrated GPU.
  • Happens both when playing video is fullscreen and windowed, as well as rendering 3d graphics (games).
  • Happens both on web browsers (Firefox, Brave) and desktop video players (VLC, SMPlayer, MPV, Celluloid).
  • On Firefox, I've tried disabling and enabling the hardware acceleration in GUI, issue persists.
  • I've tried every video output in VLC, issue persists. I've tried disabling audio output in VLC, issue persists.
  • Issue happens both with the laptop displays and external monitors (all running 60Hz, 1080p - 4K)
  • Issue remains with the 6.5 kernel.

Welcome to the forum, hopsabilto.

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware. The information you provided appears to be missing the latter half of the info.

What are the native refresh rates of the laptop screen and the Samsung monitor?

Hi SMG,

The only thing missing is what repos I have active, I omitted that to save time for the reader.

Code: Select all

Repos:
  Packages: 3318 apt: 3207 flatpak: 111
No active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list
  Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list
1: deb http: //ftp.otenet.gr/linux/linuxmint-packages virginia main upstream import backport
2: deb http: //ftp.cc.uoc.gr/mirrors/linux/ubuntu/packages jammy main restricted universe multiverse
3: deb http: //ftp.cc.uoc.gr/mirrors/linux/ubuntu/packages jammy-updates main restricted universe multiverse
4: deb http: //ftp.cc.uoc.gr/mirrors/linux/ubuntu/packages jammy-backports main restricted universe multiverse
5: deb http: //security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jammy-security main restricted universe multiverse
And then there's also this last bit:

Code: Select all

Info:
  Processes: 356 Uptime: 14d 23h 58m wakeups: 48 Memory: 39.11 GiB used: 10.23 GiB (26.2%)
  Init: systemd v: 249 runlevel: 5 Compilers: gcc: 11.4.0 alt: 11/12
Client: Unknown python3.10 client inxi: 3.3.13

Nothing else.

The laptop refresh rates can go up to 120Hz and 240Hz, but I have them and the external monitors set to the common 60Hz.

I recommend staying with the 6.5 kernel.

Do you know if you have the most recent BIOS/UEFI installed for your laptop?

The system information you posted shows the laptop screen as off (only a DP monitor is listed). If both screens are on, is the issue still there and if so, does it happen on both screens simultaneously?

How warm does you system usually get? Your system is not even pushing the CPUs hard yet the CPU temp is 79C. Nvidia is almost that high. I wonder if that might be a factor.
