I think my video driver got changed, can anyone please help? [SOLVED]

Post by Logansfury »

Good Evening,

I installed a utility to gather monitor info. I ran a command from it that was supposed to identify the busses my monitors were active on, but all 3 of my monitors went black for a second, then returned stuck at a resolution I dont want. My 3rd monitor which worked fine is now showing as unknown display. The dropdown options for all 3 monitors are greyed out.

I just did a timeshift to 10pm last night, as the issue just now happened at 4pm this afternoon, thinking that would be fine, but the problem persisted thru the timeshift.

Can anyone help me check to see what has happened to my amdgpu driver?

Thank you for reading,

Logan

Not without data. Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

What utility did you install?

Your drivers are loaded.

Your two LG Ultragears are showing at 3840x2160 @ 30Hz.
The DP port is showing as 640x480 @ 60Hz which doesn't sound good, but I seem to recall you had one small monitor and two huge ones so maybe that is correct.

You are going to have to give more details about what "destroyed" means because I don't yet understand what the problem is.

Before I entered the app command and all 3 screens went black, I had the 2xLG 32" monitors and the 1xASUS 27" monitor all three at 2560x1440. This I think was the max for the ASUS, but the LG's both had options to display at 3840x2160.

After all the monitors went black, they resumed display at 3840x2160 for the LG's and some horrible windows95 looking resolution on the 27"

The ASUS 27" is now showing at Unknown Device when it was recognized before, and all 3 monitors are locked at these unwanted resolutions with the dropdown menus to select resolutions greyed out.

In my current hyperventilating state, this is qualifying as "destroyed" >.<

I did a timeshift problem persisted and I made another user account and switched to it. problem persisted.

Can you help?

From where did you download it? I found multiple tools with that name so I don't know what you installed.

It was in the software manager, I didn't expect it to harm my system. the commands were:

sudo i2cdetect -y 1
sudo i2cdetect -y 3
sudo i2cdetect -y 5

It was supposed to identify something in the busses so I could get details about my monitors, but it ruined my system.

Have you tried completely shutting down your system (not a reboot, a shutdown) and then restarting it?

Find yourself a brown paper bag and breath in and out of it. ;)

It's possible the cable just went on the smaller monitor and this was a coincidence on timing.

If Timeshift didn't fix it, then maybe some settings are stored in your homedirectory, since Timeshift does not backup your home!
Have you searched in ~/.config or ~/.local/share if you see anything that could be related to the new software?? If so, delete it or rename it and reboot.

sudo apt purge <package> removes the software and it's configs.

You are an internet Goddess :D

The shutdown/restart fixed it, all three screens are at the resolutions I had set previously.

Thank you so much!

Good to hear. You're welcome. Sometimes a complete power reset is what is needed to get things back to their normal state.

I didn't notice anything in those commands that suggest they should do anything other than scan the buses. I don't have any idea of what may have happened.

Well it's gone to crap again.

I am now having all 3 monitors black out simultaneously stay black for 4-6 seconds then restore display. It is happening every 10-15 seconds and making it impossible to work on the linux box.

Anyone able to help with this?

Use only one monitor and see if it continues.

If you did not change the kernel/driver, then it could be a GPU issue.

My kernel updated yesterday in fact. The day all this started

What please are the steps to set my box to boot with an earlier kernel?

To boot into an older kernel, bring up the grub menu, select the Advanced Options, and then select the desired kernel.

If you do not normally see the grub menu, repeatedly tap the escape key during boot to bring up the grub menu for an UEFI boot computer (which appears to be what you have).

See this post for how to edit grub to get the menu to show if you are having problems getting that to work.

It isnt going well.

I just rebooted the linux rock and hit esc repeatedly, now I am at a black screen that says GNU GRUB version 2.06 Minimal BASH-linke line editing is supported. For the first work, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions.

and all I see on screen is:

grub>
grub>
grub>
grub>
grub>

every time I hit esc another grub> line appears and nothing else happens. I see no advanced options.

What should I do?

That's a timing issue and you missed the point at which it goes to the grub menu (which is easy to do). You can reboot and make the change so the menu always shows (the link I provided).

Technically, the proper way to get out of what you are currently seeing is this. (Scroll down to the "grub>" heading.)

OK I made SOME progress at least. I followed you instructions and performed the edit of:

Code: Select all

#GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
Then I did the:

sudo update-grub

and rebooted and the grub menu came up fine. I clicked on advanced options and selected a version 5 kernel, booted thru to desktop and immediately re-experienced the black-screen error. Every 10 seconds my monitors go black, all I can see is my mouse, and it takes 10-40 seconds for the monitors to restore display. This is infuriating and impossible conditions to work under.

I am thinking of taking the box to best buy and asking the geek squad to check the mobo and see if it will support an upgrade from HDD to SSD. I can pick up a western digital 1TB internal SSD drive for $75 on amazon. But that just means I have to start from scratch and recreate everything ive done since november 2023 to get my box back to where it is now. That's assuming nothing just breaks on me again.

Not happy with linux atm.
