[SOLVED] Nvidia 4080 Super not recognized Mint 21.3

Post by agent136 »

I have a freshly installed mint 21.3. It appears that my Nvidia 4080 Super is not being recognized and the system is defaulting to Nouveau. I get this error at start up "nouveau 0000:01:00.0: unknown chipset (193000a1) and I am unable to change my display settings. Driver Manager says no drivers needed.

Prior to this fresh install, I had tried to install the drivers for the video card from Nvidia's website specifically this one https://www.nvidia.com/download/driverR ... 426/en-us/. I simply downloaded the file and ran the executable by double clicking it, when I did this, it took over 2 hours and failed to open. It also gave me new errors at start up. I had also updated to the latest Kernel to see if that would do anything for the Driver Manager, but nothing showed. Hence why I just nuked it and started over with a fresh install. So here I am, back at square 1 and now asking for help. My system report goes as follows:

Welcome to the forum, agent136.

A 13th-gen Intel CPU needs to be using a 6 series kernel. For very new hardware like you have, we recommend using the Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon (Edge) Edition ISO which has the 6.5 kernel. You would not be able to run your onboard GPU (if you wanted to do so) with the kernel you currently have loaded. However, you do not need to re-install. Just upgrade the kernel.

Instructions for upgrading to the 6.5 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 6.5 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.
Please also run the updates in Update Manager. I can see several packages in your posted output which are not the latest versions. It is important to run all updates before installing Nvidia drivers.

If this is the correct link, the latest BIOS/UEFI is 1641 so your system is missing nearly all the updates which have been made. ASUS updates usually fix problems so I recommend updating.

This data shows there is no graphics driver loaded. That is why you cannot change resolutions.

Once you update your system and upgrade your kernel, I would expect that you should see the 535 driver available in Driver Manager. Let us know if that does not happen.

Also, if you have secure boot enabled, you will need to create keys (MOK) so the proprietary Nvidia driver will load at boot time. (Loading at boot time is a separate step from installing the driver.) Or you can disable secure boot if you so choose.

Hi,

Thank you for your response. I have updated my MOBO bios to the latest firmware. Updated in the update center. Installed and running on Kernel 6.5.0-26. However, the Driver Manager is still displaying that there is "no drivers needed" I will post my new system info for you since I have done those changes:

Again, thank you for your response. This is my first time ever using a Linux based system and also my first time posting on these forums.

I think I punched the wrong number into the driver finder because I just did the 4080 Super again and only the 550 driver is coming up. (There's no 535 driver listed.) Sorry about that.

The 550 driver is only available through the graphics-driver-ppa. That can happen when a GPU is very new. Whenever using PPAs I recommend taking a Timeshift snapshot prior to adding the PPA (directions for adding it are on the linked page.) After you add it you can then install the 550. There are general instructions here. Let us know if you have any problems with those instructions. If so, post the entire terminal output you get.

Presuming everything installs okay and you either have secure boot disabled or you create the keys (MOK) when prompted (I think ASUS prompts you--if not I can give you alternate directions for keys if you want to keep secure boot enabled) then the driver should load at boot time. You may need to reboot more than once to complete the process. You will then receive future driver updates from the PPA through Update Manager and no additional steps will be needed.

Is secure boot enabled? You can check by running the following in a terminal

Code: Select all

mokutil --sb-state
Let us know if you have any questions.

Is secure boot enabled? You can check by running the following in a terminal

Code: Select all

mokutil --sb-state

I am running with safe boot disabled. Everything worked perfectly. Thank you very much! I will post the system info one last time to show that it is there. Again, thank you.

Good to hear. Driver is showing as loaded. Please go to your first post in this topic, click the pencil icon, and add [SOLVED] to the beginning of the title and submit the revised post so others know you are no longer seeking help on this issue.

As a general recommendation, while the driver updates will come through Update Manager, I do recommend making a Timeshift snapshot before updating to a newer driver version. That way if you have any problems with the newer version (once in a while that can happen), reverting to a snapshot makes it much easier to get back to a working version.

Enjoy your Linux Mint install. :)
