[SOLVED] Adding a drive to steam (newbie!)

Post by steph »

I am trying to add a new drive to steam, but I am not sure how to do this.

I do have an extra disk that shows up when i click on add drive on steam (although i have to go into " + other locations" to find it).

I can select it, and click select on the pop up, but when the pop up closes, the drive has not been added. Any tips?

I am not sure how I installed steam but I am pretty sure that I simply used the Software Manager

Code: Select all

steam.sh[29572]: Running Steam on linuxmint 21.3 64-bit
steam.sh[29572]: STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically
setup.sh[29744]: Steam runtime environment up-to-date!
steam.sh[29572]: Steam client's requirements are satisfied

Couple of things:
- run lsblk -o +FSTYPE,UUID and share the output here; that will tell us how the 2nd drive is formatted and mounted
- run flatpak list --app and check if you have Valve's Steam in the output -- answer here if that is the case

You should set up the 2nd drive to be automatically mounted for you at boot. And if you have Steam installed as a flatpak that doesn't work with 2nd drives. You would either have to install Flatseal which will let you allow the Steam flatpak to access the 2nd drive or you should install Steam instead as a system package. For the latter go to https://store.steampowered.com/about/, download the .deb file and double-click it in your file manager after downloading to run the installer.

OP has the Valve repo added to their software sources. This cannot be added but only by installing the official deb package from store.steampowered.com, which is the recommended imho way to install Steam on Linux Mint. Therefore, it seems they're OK in this respect

Steph, in "Disks"
1. Format the extra drive in ext4
2. Then select the newly formatted drive, press the cogwheel icon --> Edit Mount Options --> Toggle off "User Session Defaults". The "mount at system startup" option previously greyed-out now will be enabled. If for any reason it is not checked, do it yourself. Reboot just in case.
3. After that I believe you will be able to add the new drive to Steam. Don't know whether manually creating a steam directory in the new drive is needed or not.

Thanks for the commands!
Although the issue was solved by reformating the dive to EXT4, as recomended by an other user, I apreciate them and will at minimum remember the "flatpak list -app" command for sure!
