Mint freezes every few hours

Post by SymbolicFrank »

"journalctl -b -p3" shows this:

Code: Select all

Mar 24 14:54:32 frank001 kernel: ata6: softreset failed (device not ready)
Mar 24 14:54:32 frank001 kernel: ata6.00: revalidation failed (errno=-5)

"ucsi_ccg" seems to be an Nvidia device, but I don't have those.

What can I do? I tried installing the software to make core dumps, but it's very unclear how that works.

You can start by posting your system information as indicated you should do in How to get help (the section in pink right above your topic title).

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

Then you can explain what you are doing on the computer when it freezes and whether or not leaving the system be for a while causes it to "un-freeze".

I'm not doing anything special that I can think of. Browsing the internet. Listening to music. Watching videos. I do try to copy a lot of files from some ntfs drives, on and off. That's problematic, because when the computer freezes and I have to use the reset button, they're all corrupt and I have to boot Windows to run chkdsk on all of them. I assumed that would work, with the ntfs driver now part of the kernel, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I also play computer games, BG3 through proton at the moment, and it hasn't crashed yet when I was doing so.

If this is the correct link, the latest BIOS/UEFI is F15. That may help.

You can also see if updating to the latest amdgpu linux-firmware helps with your 6950 XT. Instructions for updating are here.

So you are not waiting to see if the freeze clears? You are automatically pressing the reset button which not only can corrupt what is being transferred but also corrupt your Linux Mint install?

Copying lots of files of any type can be an issue and make it appear the system is freezing. I suggest you give it time (10-20 minutes not seconds) to let it finish.

A freeze is a different issue from a crash. They are not the same thing.

If you go to System Reports and click the Crash Reports tab on the left, are there any crashes listed on the right?

Never ever use the reset button in Linux, it's a good way to totally corrupt the file system.

And while the Linux kernel does have an NTFS driver that file spec isn't fully documented. So the kernel devs can't write a proper driver for it and you can't really trust Linux NTFS tools for anything other than basic reads and writes. For any sort of file system repair you need chkdsk. All my ext drives are ext4 now but before that I used Hiren's Boot CD to fix a couple of USB NTFS drives.

I don't have any other suggestions other than doing what SMG suggested.

There is one crash reported:

Code: Select all

The package providing /home/frank/.local/share/lutris/runners/wine/wine-ge-8-26-x86_64/bin/wine64-preloader could not be found.
If you want to generate a stack trace for this crash report, please reinstall it.
But it's from yesterday. I uninstalled Lutris, just in case.

And I do wait a bit after it freezes. I also tried opening a terminal, but the keyboard is dead. And if it doesn't respond to keyboard, mouse or the power button, I can only think of a single way to re-enable it next to pressing the reset button: pulling the power plug. Ok, I could try enabling ssh connections or such.

It started about a week ago, it did work well for months, except for halting a few times due to the caspar-md5 bug and not suspending. Before that it ran a year on Windows without problems.

I just bought a new laptop so I could make a WindowsToGo USB stick, because it bothers me that I have to dual-boot into Windows to keep my Linux system running. That's also why I'm trying to migrate my drives to ext4.

I did run apt update / apt upgrade, but that made no difference. I do keep everything up to date.

I did download a new BIOS, but it's not that easy from Linux. I did buy a new USB stick, so I could give it a go, but that probably only could help with the suspend issue. And I'm not a fan of changing a lot of random stuff in the hope that it fixes my problem. That rarely works.

That's why I ask for advice :)

I think the only significant thing that changed between when it worked and now is upgrading the kernel from 5.15 to 6.5.

Perhaps the problem is indeed in the ntfs support and I do have to change/remove other drivers or such now the ntfs driver is fully in the kernel?

A 6000 series GPU needs to be using a 6 series kernel because those and the newer amdpgu linux-firmware are the ones most likely to have less problems.

Suspend issues with AMD need to be using a 6 series kernel if you want any hope of the issue clearing. I've seen that fixed with 6 series kernels too many times to not make that recommendation.

So the problem is not the system crashing. Your system is freezing. When a freeze happens then all inputs are queued which means it may appear the keyboard it not working because your keystrokes are in the queue and waiting for the backlog to clear.
SymbolicFrank wrote: Sun Mar 24, 2024 11:54 amAnd I do wait a bit after it freezes.
How many minutes is "a bit"? I ask that as someone who waited more than 20 minutes for freeze situation on her browser to clear because I didn't want to lose information that was displayed.

Do you have a Timeshift snapshot from before that date to which you can revert?

If you think the issue is the kernel, that is easy enough to revert, but I do not recommend using the 5.15 kernel with a 6950 XT.

What "random stuff" are you referencing? If you are discussing the specific advice I gave you that has helped others with similar hardware fix their problems then good luck with your issue.

I'm not doubting I need a 6.5 kernel, I'm just wondering what else I have to change, like removing the ntfs-3g drivers? I did check and the drives are mounted as ntfs3, when fully fixed by chkdsk.

I didn't wait for more than a minute. It's quite a powerful system, 12 cores / 64 GB RAM etc. Things that made my old system stutter aren't noticeable on this one. And it's not like it slows down, it just stops, turns the keyboard lighting off and starts repeating the last bit of sound. That's it.

I didn't make a Timeshift snapshot that I know of.

Ok, I'll upgrade the BIOS if that is a requirement to get help.

It took multiple tries (incorrect manual, incorrect file system, incorrect USB port), but it's now version 16:

What I can find about the new kernel drivers is a very patchy story. The website about it is gone, the online manual page is depreciated and the ntfs support is somewhere between just read and limited write (no create), to full support with journaling, depending on the source. Not helped by the author having disappeared. So, I have totally no idea what and how it is supposed to work, if at all.

Just to be sure, when reinstalling ntfs-3g, I got a lot of warnings:

Code: Select all

frank@frank001:~$ sudo apt reinstall ntfs-3g

So I guess I'll have to reboot Windows, chkdsk my drives again and see what happens.

We have a Storage forum where you might get more information about transferring to NTFS formatted drives. I'm not familiar with it, but here is one topic with information that you may find helpful.
SymbolicFrank wrote: Sun Mar 24, 2024 1:43 pmI didn't wait for more than a minute. It's quite a powerful system, 12 cores / 64 GB RAM etc. Things that made my old system stutter aren't noticeable on this one. And it's not like it slows down, it just stops, turns the keyboard lighting off and starts repeating the last bit of sound. That's it.
That sounds like it could be a power distribution issue to the rails/drives on the motherboard.

Most of your drives appear to be HDDs so they would likely be the limiting factor rather than your computer.
SymbolicFrank wrote: Sun Mar 24, 2024 2:05 pm It took multiple tries (incorrect manual, incorrect file system, incorrect USB port), but it's now version 16:
I believe you. I'm trying to download a Gigabyte manual right now (from their website) and I'm getting "Secure Connection Failed" and to contact the website owner.

If the issue is mainly happening during data transfers, then we'll see if the newer BIOS/UEFI helps. If you are also seeing it when videos/websites are up, then I recommend the amdgpu linux-firmware update too.

We have a Storage forum where you might get more information about transferring to NTFS formatted drives. I'm not familiar with it, but here is one topic with information that you may find helpful.

Thanks, I'll look into the ntfs bit.

When I upgraded my computer last time, I went with a generic power supply that should be good enough, but that wasn't the case. Especially with the GPU going full-out, it went as high as 750 watt, while the PSU was rated for 700. (I bought a watt meter power socket to check). So now I have a smart PSU (be quiet! Pure Power 12M 850W) that is definitely up to the task.

I specifically said "power distribution to the rails". I helped someone in the past who had a PSU that had an overall rating which should have been fine for the computer, but there was variation in the distribution of power to individual rails that in his case was enough to periodically drop below what was needed to keep his Linux Mint drive powered. He was getting spontaneous reboots each time the slight dip happened. I'm not a power engineer, but he talked with someone who was. That is not to say that is specifically an issue in your case. I'm just saying I know things like that can happen.

Yes, that's the difference between a generic and a smart PSU. ATX12V 3.0 is the standard that does two things: it distributes the power to the individual sockets on the PSU, instead of just measuring one voltage on one rail, and it allows for short spikes that are much higher than the rated maximum wattage. Thereby eliminating those stability problems.
