After upgrade to 21.3 Firefox screens suddenly very dark

Hello. I upgraded from 20.2 to 21.3 two days ago. Took it step-by-step through the Mint update instructions (that is, NOT a clean install). After doing all the usual package updates Firefox (version "Mozilla Firefox for Linux Mint, mint-001 - 1.0") is quite dark, almost as if it's running in dark mode. This is not a website-specific issue.

I have looked and looked at the settings in Firefox and despite trying cannot find anything that will give me back the screen brightness I had previously. I viewed the same websites using Chrome and on Chrome everything looks normal -- definitely brighter than Firefox.

I have also looked at various settings in Mint (for example from the menu) Preferences>Themes>System Setting>Desktop (or Applications) including "Simplified settings." Despite trying various choices I cannot effect the change back to where I was before the upgrade to 21.3. Firefox is just so dark.

I have made all my adjustments in the GUI as my skills at the command line are very, very limited.

Unless there is an enabled "dark mode" setting I have not found (yes? no?) I am completely stumped.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You might find this interesting in suggesting how I can get to a solution.

I powered-off my pooter and then used my Mint 21.3 boot thumbdrive to power-up to the landing page. (Mint logo desktop)

Then without making any changes at the landing page I clicked on the Firefox icon.

My website and the others that had been displaying very dark appeared perfectly normal. Nice and bright!

So perhaps(?) there is a setting in my own Firefox that is causing the display (dark) problems.

I have been through all of the Firefox configuration settings I can find and everything appears to be normal.

Might there be a setting somewhere in Mint 21.3 that I need to change? I did not knowingly alter Mint 21.3 from the default settings during the upgrade process.

Hello, everyone. Wanted to bring you up to speed on what I've tried in order to get Firefox performing correctly.

Firefox 125.0.1, Mint 21.3 Cinnamon

1) I tried a recommendation from Firefox in <about:support> to do a "Refresh." Clicked on that button and it created a new profile but still the display was very dark.

2) From <about:profiles> I moved back and forth between profiles looking for changes to what I saw. Closed and reopened Firefox each time but it made no difference.

3) I also manually created a new profile but that made no difference.

4) I created a new user in Mint 21.3, logged into that user and opened Firefox. But no difference. Still very dark.

So the only time I see Firefox correctly displayed is when I boot from a Mint 21.3 thumbdrive that I created to boot the pooter when doing backups to an external hard drive.

As best I can tell I've tried every suggestion that Mint colleagues have offered but I am at a standstill with Firefox. If anyone has any suggestions or wishes me to post any readouts please let me know. (Otherwise I will have to start using Chrome -- not my preferred browser.)

By the way, just to add to the frustration, Claws-Mail does not seem to play nice with my installation of Mint 21.3. Often (and I mean often) some e-mails will "pin" one or more of the four CPUs at or near 100%, freezing the pooter sometimes for more than 30 seconds.

And Mint 21.3 doesn't play nice with my installation of Crossover Office (22.0.1). When I try to insert some but not all .jpgs into a Word or Powerpoint document they are profoundly "yellow." The size of a .jpg seems to have no bearing on the issue, and many other .jpgs display properly.

I've been going back and forth with Crossover tech support on this problem for about six months, but though they can recreate the problem in their labs they have no solution and suggest that maybe the problem will go away with the next release of Mint. Hmmm...

So at this point of total frustration I am thinking of uninstalling Mint 21.3 and reinstalling 20.3 that I know did display correctly and worked with both Claws-Mail and an earlier version of Crossover Office.
