display freezes when moving mouse

Post by kadachi »

Hi,

I'm new here and to linux. Recent mint cinnamon install on a new PC build. I'm having issues with the display freezing when I move the cursor while HD content is playing both from a file and on youtube. When I change the video resolution on youtube below 720 it stops freezing when I move the cursor over the video.

Help...

Update

As you can see above, I have the latest kernel.
I have disabled the window effects which helped reduce it happening.
I have run the audio through the monitor which helps, but it still happens. And by help, I mean it will freeze once, and then after it unfreezes it wont freeze again for a little while, even if I run the cursor on and off of the video.
What I have noticed is that 1-2CPU cores jump to 100% after it unfreezes. The freeze happens for 1-5 seconds, the audio continues, and then the video catches up.

Is this likely a hardware or driver issue?
I have run GtkStressTesting on CPU: All methods, 30 mins, 20 workers. Temp maxed at 78 on a couple of cores, otherwise they sat between 50-65 and no crashes.
I have installed memtest but it doesn't show on boot. (another issue I'm sorting)

Could you explain what that means? It sounds like you are playing two different videos simultaneously?

What web browser are you using?

If this is the correct link for your BIOS/UEFI, it appears there is a beta version with "Update Intel APO (DTT) framework version". Perhaps that is a factor in what you are seeing? I'm not one to recommend beta BIOS/UEFI versions so if it were my hardware I'd just be adjusting the fps so the issue did not happen until Gigabyte comes out with a final version, but I wanted to make you aware that it might be hardware related.

You have very new hardware so it may be that a mainline kernel would have better support, but it's also possible this is a browser issue.

If you have not yet done so, you may want to upgrade the amdgpu linux-firmware to see if that helps. Instructions are here.

Sorry if I was not clear.
When I play either a video with celluloid or VLC, if I move the cursor into the video frame it will freeze for a couple of seconds, the sound will continue and then the video will catch up. It also freezes sometimes when I double click the video for it to go full screen.
Also and separate when watching youtube with chrome, if I do the same, by moving the cursor into the video frame it will freeze, audio continue, then video will catch up. It does this for all HD streams. It doesn't do this with 720p and below.

I get a 503 error when I try to download it. I will try again later.

There are different playback settings for those types of apps. I don't know if they might play a factor in this. I do not usually help with those types of issues.

Same for your comment about watching the Youtube video. I don't use Chrome.
