[CLOSED-hardware problem] Nvidia GPU not working on dual gpu laptop

Post by ryancc3 »

Hello,

This is my first time posting in the linux mint forum so please bear with me.
I have a hp pavilion gaming laptop with a 1050 mobile gpu and also a ryzen apu. I have tried installing the Gpu drivers in multiple different ways, with the GUI utility, in the command line, using the .run file from nvidia's website. The result is nvidia-smi returns no devices found. I have scoured the forum and tried so many different things for hours to no avail.

This specific install I tried the following steps to install the driver.
CTRL + ALT + F1

Code: Select all

sudo service lightdm stop
sudo apt install nvidia-driver-535
sudo apt install nvidia-prime
sudo apt install lightdm --reinstall
reboot
Here are some useful outputs

Code: Select all

Welcome to the forum, ryancc3.

That is not a good idea because unless you undo method 1 before trying method 2, it is possible to end up with multiple drivers on your system simultaneously and that causes problems.

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

Welcome to the forum, ryancc3.

That is not a good idea because unless you undo method 1 before trying method 2, it is possible to end up with multiple drivers on your system simultaneously and that causes problems.
I am fairly new to Linux but I did use sudo apt-get remove --purge '^nvidia-.*' before every other attempt.
That is not appropriate for several reasons.
  1. You have a dual-GPU laptop and doing that removes the nvidia-prime-applet which is a Linux Mint file.
  2. Nvidia drivers from their website are NOT packages. You cannot remove their drivers with that command. You must run the nvidia-uninstaller to remove those drivers.
  3. Installing the Nvidia drivers from the Nvidia website presumes you only have an Nvidia GPU which is not your situation. You can end up shutting out your onboard GPU when you install drivers from the Nvidia website.
ryancc3 wrote: Tue Apr 02, 2024 6:58 pmHere is the output of the system report
The first thing you should be doing before installing any Nvidia drivers is updating your system with all the updates show in Update Manager. You have not done that because the kernel you are running is not the latest 5.15 kernel.

You definitely have your Nvidia graphics messed up.

What is the output of

Code: Select all

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
That file should not exist on a dual-gpu laptop. The data you posted suggests it does exist. One reason it may exist is because you did not remove the nvidia drivers you installed from the Nvidia website. If you did not re-install Linux Mint after installing the driver from the Nvidia website, run the uninstaller to remove it.

If that file still exists after you run the uninstaller, remove it.

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I realize now that I did not run the nvidia installer from the website on this specific installation, but the file at /etc/X11/xorg.conf did exist so I removed it. I then ran sudo apt install nvidia-prime-applet, rebooted the computer. The command nvidia-smi still says no devices found. I wonder if it would be simpler to do a fresh install of linux mint? Should I install the drivers through the terminal command, or through driver manager?

I have updated my BIOS, reinstalled mint and installed the drivers with the driver manager utility. I am still facing the same issue where nvidia-smi says no devices found.

I'll post the outputs again for reference

There is no nvidia display driver showing as loaded even though the kernel driver is showing as loaded. Both amdgpu and nvidia should have an X driver loaded.

Graphics:
Device-1: NVIDIA GP107M [GeForce GTX 1050 3 GB Max-Q] vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: nvidia

That is an odd situation that I've seen happen when people have an "open" Nvidia driver loaded, but that is not your situation. I've seen it happen in at least one other type of situation, but I'm drawing a blank right now on the source reason for the other situation so let's check two different logs to see what clues they may provide.

What is the output of

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/gpu-manager.log
X Server runs the graphics in Linux Mint. Please use this command in a terminal to upload the X Server log file to termbin:

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999
It will return with a url address you can post in your next reply.

Did you disable the gpu-manager?

The Xorg log shows the Nvidia GPU was probed, but there is no other mention of it at all. Only the AMD drm device was added.

Code: Select all

What is the output of

Code: Select all

journalctl -b | grep -i "drm\|nvidia\|NVRM\|01:00.0"

I haven't disabled the gpu-manager. On this specific install I have only done the steps mentioned above to keep it simple and make troubleshooting easier.
What is the output of

And you are sure the command was typed correctly? I don't know of any reason that it would not have logged. :?

Do you know for sure the Nvidia GPU works properly when running Windows on this laptop?

Install a newer kernel which will force the Nvidia modules to rebuild and we'll see if maybe that helps.
Instructions for upgrading to the 6.5 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 6.5 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Thanks so much for your help.. I booted into windows and checked device manager. GPU giving me error 43, used DDU to uninstall the drivers. Reinstalling the driver from nvidia did not fix the problem. DDU again, installed the gpu driver from the hp website for my specific laptop, caused windows to boot loop. I think its safe to say that the gpu is dead.

I've updated the bios, removed the battery and cleared cmos. Nothing has worked. At this point I'll just buy a new laptop with an amd gpu in it.

Once again I really appreciate your help in diagnosing the issue!

The dreaded yellow triangle. :(

I'm not familiar with the laptop to know if that GPU is something which one might be able to repair or replace.

The onboard GPU is no slouch so the laptop is still a capable computer, but it is possible it does not meet your needs without the dedicated GPU.

Please go to your first post in this topic, click the pencil icon, and add [CLOSED-hardware problem] to the beginning of the title and submit the revised post so others know you are no longer seeking help on this issue.
