How to install 'newsboat' if neither apt nor make will work?

Post by atax »

Greetings,

I've been using Mint only for a couple of days
- and I am trying to get 'newsboat' https://github.com/newsboat/newsboat up und running. In Kubuntu 23.10 this was possible with 'apt get', with Mint 22 however, apt prints:
Package newsboat is not available, but is referred to by another package.
Isn't 'Mint 22' using the same Repos as K/Ubuntu 23.10 ???

Following these ( https://www.tecmint.com/newsboat-rss-a ... terminals/) instructions on how to copy the source code and make/build newsboat didn't work either, due to missing dependency that apt could'nt install cause they were also missing in the Repos!

Question:
Any idea how else to install newsboat? Should I just try and use the Kubuntu 22.10 Repo's? Or should I rather go for the unpopular Ubuntu Snap Pack Version of newsboat?

Any help is welcome!
Thank you!

Linux Mint 22 is using Ubuntu 24.04 as a package base. newsboat is not available in that, it was available in 23.10 as you say: https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=newsboat. Ubuntu import a lot of their packages from Debian testing and newsboat was removed from Debian testing at the end of November 2023: https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/newsboat. Hence it's not available in Ubuntu 24.04.

Maybe the Ubuntu 23.10 version of newsboat can be installed on Linux Mint 22. You can try manually downloading the package from here https://packages.ubuntu.com/mantic/newsboat. Double-click the downloaded file in your file manager to launch the installer. It will tell you if it can't be installed and why not.

[SOLVED] Re: How to install 'newsboat' if neither apt nor make will work?

Worked!

By downloading the file 'newsboat_2.32-3_amd64.deb' for my AMD/Intel PC from the link you provided https://packages.ubuntu.com/mantic/newsboat and installing it with a package manager (not dpkg, because that doesn't solve dependencies), newsboat now is running on my system! :)

Thanks again!
