instantly connect wireless connection
Right now, it takes around 20 seconds for my computer to decide to connect to a wireless connection. Are there any settings that make it connect as soon as the desktop loads like on Windows?

Have you tried to right click NetworkManager applet > Edit Connections > Wireless > Edit, and checking "Connect automatically"?

Do it the windows way, wait until you are sure the desktop is running before doing any work
--in windows OS, that means the hard drive is still spinning while the login and desktop loads completes
Unfortunately some Linux distributions now think that is a good idea, the sizzle instead of the bacon, the flash instead of the result
--knowing that most users will conflate the two results in their minds,: that is, the desktop is loaded, I have logged in, so it must be ready to go, not noticing that the wireless connection waited until the desktop was really ready!
As to Linux, you can control the start-up almost completely, if you want to learn that distributions scripting styles and options
--otherwise, you just turn off extra or unneeded services on start-up, which will load the system quicker, the quickest one that comes to mind is simply cutting the menu display delay from the default 10-30secs to 1 to 2 secs for boot
