So not only is Ubuntu going to ditch Gnome Shell for Unity they are going to replace X Windows with Wayland, though that might not be a bad thing, it will get rid of that extra layer and use the faster Wayland for the UI making it faster. Fedora is also going to eventually drop X Windows for Wayland.
Will Linux Mint also switch over to Wayland? It might be a good thing.

Very good question. X is very old and pretty much a clusterfudge as far as the code is concerned(AFAIK I'm not a dev) It might not be a bad idea to start over fresh. From what I've heard Wayland will be able to run X on top of it if needed, which to me sounds like it'll add an overhead until apps are made to natively run on Wayland.

I am not sure if this is news but apparently Wayland is now available for Natty: http://www.muktware.com/n/25/2011/791/w ... buntu-1104.
Has anyone tried it yet? Will Linux Mint make the package available too?

It's not in any useful state currently. If you read the post the packages are nothing more then demos. The packages are in the Ubuntu Natty repo so I don't see why you shouldn't be able to install them in Mint 11.kvv wrote:I am not sure if this is news but apparently Wayland is now available for Natty: http://www.muktware.com/n/25/2011/791/w ... buntu-1104.
