VIA VT1708S Jack sense not working

Post by vivian.j » Tue Dec 27, 2011 12:24 am

Okay, another jack sense problem. I just installed Mint 12 on my Asus K40AB laptop, but when i plug the jack in, the sound keep coming out from the speaker,

here is more information on my laptop:
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0* | grep Codec gave me this output:
VIA VT1708S

lspci gives me this: http://pastebin.com/bnqrKCMH

cat /proc/asound/cards gives me this:
0 [SB ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB
HDA ATI SB at 0xfbcf4000 irq 16

aplay -l gives me this:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: VT1708S Analog [VT1708S Analog]
Subdevices: 1/2
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
Subdevice #1: subdevice #1

here is a screenshot of the alsamixer running on terminal: http://dug.im/0a9cf
for some reason, the headphone bar is greyed out. is this normal? btw, the headphone is plugged in.

i tried adding the 'options snd-hda-intel model=auto' line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, restarted the pc, but it still doesnt solve the problem

can anyone help?

EDIT: I just noticed this, but when i plugged in the jack, the volume got muted, but this causes no sound to come out from the headphone either.. and when i unmuted it, sound comes out from both the speaker and headphone again...

I had a very similar Asus K51AC (same chipset, same audio hw). Never got headphones sensing to work until I ditched pulseaudio (-> howto). With plain ALSA it worked flawlessly.

It's working without a hitch on Asus M4N68T LE V2 with VIA VT1708S as well, with Mint 12.

Actually, i tried that before, but it still didnt work. there are several differences though:
- there is no pulseaudio in my startup applications from the beginning
- i did a mistake where i installed libalsaplayer0 and esound before restarting the computer
- i messed around with the computer before?

its still the same, when i plugged in the headphone, the volume is muted, including the headphone, but when i unmuted it, sound comes out from both speaker and the headphone.
any idea where should i look into next before re-installing and trying your fix before anything else? (i try to avoid this, have installed quite a lot of other applications)

Having same issue with LM 12 and VT1708S chipset on ASUS motherboard with pulse audio disabled. reinstallation didn't work for me.
