[SOLVED]Sony Vaio laptop camera not recognised.

Post by cliver » Tue Jan 10, 2012 5:12 am

Hi All,

I have Mint 12 installed on my Sony Vaio VGN-AR630E which I am using to evaluate as I am looking to migrate/wean myself off windows.
All seems to be fine except I can't get it to see the built in camera or mic :?: .
I tried installing cheese and running but it says no device found.
I assume it wasn't found on installation and no drivers were installed for it.
I can't find anything on how to "Add Hardware" or install drivers.
The additional drivers package doesn't find anything.
I have searched for any info on here but nothing seems to pint me in the right direction.
Any help to point me in the right direction greatly appreciated.

Regards
Clive

Try in a terminal

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe uvcvideo
If that doesn't work see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Webcam and the included links.

Thanks remoulder.
What should I expect from sudo modprobe uvcvideo?
It runs, doesn't report anything but terminates normally.

I'll look at the ubuntu forums link meanwhile.

Regards
Clive

UPDATE:
Tried following intructions from the link to ubuntu community but when I get to the part where it downloads the driver ...
wget http://www.rastageeks.org/downloads/ov5 ... 5.4.tar.gz

It returns error 404 'File Not Found' :(

Absolutely nothing, it's just to load a driver, you need to test whether the webcam works afterwards.

Hmmm! was hopeful of a resolution reading the thread.

I carried out the intructions in the post near the bootom
aka...
April 3rd, 2011, 11:18 AM
Another update!

Things move on and I'm now on 11.04.

Point is that my previous solution, documented in the last couple of pages of this thread, used to just work but not on 11.04.

So having trawled around the net for an hour I came up with this from:

http://www.big-boogi.de/?tag=r5u870

First install the needed packages:

sudo apt-get install libglib2.0-dev libusb-dev build-essential gcc automake mercurial

Now we get the required software (firmware files and udev rules):

hg clone http://bitbucket.org/ahixon/r5u87x/

Change directory to the currently loaded:

cd r5u87x

Make the script:

make

And the whole installation:

sudo make install

And now all is well again.
Alas it still doesn't work.

Output from lsusb and dmeg now reads
clive@Sony-Vaio ~ $ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 007 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 05ca:1839 Ricoh Co., Ltd Visual Communication Camera VGP-VCC6 [R5U870]
clive@Sony-Vaio ~ $ dmesg | grep 'uvcvideo'
[ 18.375446] uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device <unnamed> (05ca:1839)
[ 18.388872] uvcvideo: UVC non compliance - GET_DEF(PROBE) not supported. Enabling workaround.
[ 18.389172] uvcvideo: Failed to query (129) UVC probe control : -32 (exp. 26).
[ 18.389176] uvcvideo: Failed to initialize the device (-5).
[ 18.389249] usbcore: registered new interface driver uvcvideo
Stumped now :?

I think the bit spandey meant you to try was

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:r5u87x-loader/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install r5u87x
sudo /usr/share/r5u87x/r5u87x-download-firmware.sh

Ah! didn't try that because it didn't seem to work for all.
Tried it and after a restart camera now working. Excellent :D :D
Just got to look at the built in mike now... but that's another story/thread

Many thanks to all for the help.
I'm slowly learning more about this linux lark :? :P

Hello,

I have the same problem and have tried the solution proposed at viewtopic.php?t=91266
but still no luck.
The last bit of advice was to do this:

Code: Select all

sudo /usr/share/r5u87x/r5u87x-download-firmware.sh
and I got:
This script is going to download and install firmware for Ricoh R5U87x
series cameras. The copyright and license status of this firmware are
unclear.
Do you want to proceed? [y/n] y
Downloading firmware...
Installing...
Loading firmware into your camera...
r5u87x firmware loader v0.2

Searching for device...

Error: Failed to find any supported webcams.

My laptop is a Sony Vaio VGN-NS11J, with Linux Mint 18.1 Serena MATE 64-bit. I know the problem is not physical because the camera was working just fine in linux mint 13 Maya just a couple of days ago. I upgraded yesterday to Serena.
lsusb does not list the camera and dmesg | grep 'uvcvideo' gives
[ 388.308934] usbcore: registered new interface driver uvcvideo

Help please?!!!
