So Mint runs fine, then no problem previous experience with another distribution is history..
--or do you mean you have a supercomputer running Mint now, but you are concerned that it won't run well on a 433MHz Celeron PC; if so you are right..

all reasons for some concern when running a modern OS, with a full suite of services and applications..
  • low processor speed
  • cpu type being Celeron
  • amount of memory (RAM)
  • the video card type
  • Mplayer is a media player
  • Xine is a media player
  • Mplayer sometimes uses a xine backend component for some functions
--its a mix & match situation.. thus there is no mplayer vs mplayer/xine application comparison..

You could try installing VLC from the repos and see if the files will play. VLC will usually play anything you can throw at it.
