[UNSOLVED] New update manager has problems recognizing the source

Post by ineuw »

The latest version of the update manager cannot refresh the updates, and demands to change the source. In the next round of updates, it has the same problem with the new source as well. So, I change back to the default, and then the following update repeats the problem. sudo apt update or upgrade works fine in the terminal. Using Y-PPA or the update manager's maintenance tools, everything works fine. It is only the update manager that report problems.

What sources are you using? Just saw a PSA sticky that evowise (one of the "main" mirrors) shut down their service yesterday.

Also, be sure to update the cache after you change Mirrors.

Cache update is second nature.

The current sources are the default where I am located, and these are the only sources that worked ten minutes ago. All other (Canadian) servers reject connection and tell me to choose another.

Hello, ineuw.

In the Update Manager preferences switch off the "search for the fastest mirror".
This will prevent Update Manager from telling you to switch mirrors all the time.
It will, however, not prevent you from searching for better mirror servers using Software Sources, in case you want to do so.

Note:
Once you disable the automatic search for the fastest mirror servers, the setting will no longer be displayed. So you will not be able to re-enable the automatism through the preferences. But you can do so using dconf-editor. Setting com.linuxmint.updates.default-repo-is-ok on/off.

Regards,
Karl

Much thanks for the instructions. Implemented it through the dconf-editor, which in itself is impressive.

Unfortunately, the current update manager doesn't have that option. (LMC20.2)

It worked until this morning and now, this is what happens again.

Here is the scenario.
1 I got the error message on opening taskbar notice
2 Changed the sources to anything I wanted, or just re-selected the same sources, even the suggested defaults
3 It updates, and everything is fine.
4 New update notice appears and I get the same error notice again.
5 I repeat the cycle, starting with #2.

Consider this as a well documented failure. Otherwise, I will update and upgrade in the terminal. Each time an update is indicated, I must change the source to anything other than the previously set. Then it updates with the new source and the software updates are installed. I usually use Google Public DNS, but there is no difference with, or without it. There is no connection problems in the browsers. I am uploading two more images in the next post

You might try the fix from this thread:
viewtopic.php?t=329793

"I fixed the issue by doing these steps:

1- I opened this file >> "/var/lib/synaptic/preferences"

2- I added a new line, then saved it.

3- I removed the new line, then saved it again."

Thanks, This is an interesting problem and so is this possible solution. It's been decades since I kicked a tire, used the handcrank instead of the starter, and blew into the carburetor to get rid of some dirt. :-) This is also a new install of 20.1 as of 2021-05-30, and upggraded three weeks ago to 20.2

P.S By the way, the file was empty.

I don't understand. Are you saying it didn't work or you didn't try it yet?

I don't know because there were no updates today. But sudo apt update always worked and that is what threw me. This issue is only with the Update Manager. Aren't they using the same source?

If you click Refresh in Update Manager, do you still get the same errors?

It refreshes now OK. No error. I will see what happens when there is an update notice in the next days.

Well, I am back to the drawing board with the identical issue, but tracking the source down this time may be easier. I had two minor updates earlier and there were no problems. Just now I received the same messages as I posted previously, but remembered that sudo apt update operates regardless, so I ran command and it reported back at the end that all is up to date. Looked at the Update Manager and it also reported that everything is up to date. At least it's a solution.

I am venturing a guess that there may be an undiscovered lag between the app and the sources.
